Canada Job Bank

The Canada Job Bank is an online search engine for open job positions across Canada. The bank and Express Entry together let eligible employers in Canada and eligible skilled foreign nationals connect with one another more easily. Job Bank can help you make well-informed decisions about where to live and work by producing a report that contains information on job descriptions, wages, skills, language training and job opportunities tailored to your needs. It helps match candidates with Canadian employers and jobs based on their skills, knowledge, and experience.

Job Bank and Express Entry let eligible employers in Canada and eligible skilled foreign nationals connect with one another more easily. Employers must make every effort to first try and find a Canadian or permanent resident to fill their job vacancy before they can consider a skilled immigrant.

In most cases, employers who want to hire a foreign national must register with Job Bank and post their employment ad for a minimum of 30 days (as well as meet other advertising requirements). If they can’t find a Canadian or permanent resident, employers can extend their job ad and broaden their candidate search to include foreign workers. If they find a qualified foreign national, the employer must, in most cases, apply for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) in order to hire them. There are certain exceptions.

Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) assesses all LMIA applications. In many cases, employers will need a positive LMIA to make a qualifying job offer to a foreign national under Express Entry.

The employer then provides this information, along with a job offer letter, to the candidate to include in their Express Entry profile. Candidates can get points for their job offer in Express Entry. This can help them be offered an invitation to apply for permanent residence in the next eligible round of invitations.

Eligible employers can be matched with qualified candidates in the Express Entry pool.

Through Job Bank, Express Entry candidates can explore jobs and sign up with Job Match to view jobs that match their skill set and qualifications.

Employers will continue to be matched to Canadian and permanent resident Job Seeker profiles while their job is advertised on Job Bank. Matches will be made based on an employer’s job listing and a candidate’s skills, knowledge and experience. To be matched, candidates must be eligible through Express Entry.

The Government of Canada recently modernized Job Bank, which has resulted in:

  • An improved online user experience
  • Upgrades to the site’s security features to match industry standards
  • More up-to-date labour market information so that users can make better and more informed career decisions.

more up-to-date labour market information so that users can make better and more informed career decisions.

  • Hire Canadians and permanent residents for available jobs
  • View matches of eligible foreign job seekers in the Express Entry pool if no Canadians or permanent residents are available.

Job Match, available through Job Bank, is an example of how the Government of Canada is finding ways to better utilize technology to connect employers with Canadians and eligible Express Entry candidates who have in-demand skills and training. Job Bank is also a useful tool for family members of a person immigrating through Express Entry. It can help them find jobs in Canada.
